Wysips's Transparent Film Transforms Your Cell Into A Solar Panel
Solar-powered cell phones are gaining increasing interest lately, yet they require you to ditch your current and beloved iPhone or Droid. I covered the Umeox solar-powered Android a while ago, and Samsung has launched three varieties of solar-powered cell phones in recent years. However, Wysips, a small, French technology company, has developed new technology to transform any regular cell phone into a solar-powered phone. The company's thin, transparent, photovoltaic film is placed on the screen to continuously contribute to a battery's charge using UV rays.
Only 100 microns thick, the film is impressively thin and contains strips of transparent, photovoltaic cells, on top of which a layer of cylindrical lenticular lenses allow users to see light from the screen undistorted. The photovoltaic cells capture energy from the sun that can be used as electricity to continuously power the phone. Fortunately, the film does not have an impact on touch-screen capabilities. The company contends that the film can charge a typical phone in approximately six hours with continuous, direct sunlight; however, charging it indoors would take somewhat longer.
The film would allow you to charge your phone with the traditional charger far less than without it. A user can simply place his phone on the window sill and watch the phone seemingly charge itself, thus saving electricity and the hassle of having a charger on hand at all times. What's more, this technology could potentially allow cell phone companies to create slimmer, more inexpensive batteries for phones. And the film isn't limited to just cell phones. Wysips contends that it is suitable for and can be tailored to other devices such as mp3 players, GPS devices, tablets, and e-readers. The company is currently working on a second generation model which would allow 30 to 60 minutes of talk time from just one hour of solar charging. According to Wysips, the film should be on the market in about a year.
