Yamaha Wants To Stick You In A Wheel To Save Space

Congestion on the roads can be a hassle, but what if you put everyone in the smallest vehicle possible?  That's the concept behind Yamaha's Wheel Rider design for commuters, which puts you inside of a wheel in a Tron-esque minimal-space vehicle.

In this concept, the rider would basically sit inside a giant wheel, and the tire would rotate over them.  The idea would take up a lot less space than the typical automobile, but it doesn't look very comfortable.  Also, if the entire vehicle is just one wheel, how large would it have to be to comfortably accomodate even one passenger?

Keeping in mind that this is just a concept, I really think Yamaha would have a hard time getting this idea off the ground.  It would cost a lot of money to engineer and produce one of these, so the price tag would probably be pretty unappealing to the average consumer.  Also, it'd be pretty tough to get a date if you had to cram her into a sidewheel or drag her along the road behind you.

While space-saving design strategies are definitely the wave of the future, who wants to be stuffed into a cramped little wheel, even just for their commute?  Granted, being in a vehicle that seems to take its inspiration from the original Tron movie carries its own charm, but the practical nature of this design is almost non-existent.  What do you think?  Would you ride in one of these every day?  Let us know in the comments.
