The $10,000 Cupcake: 'You Make Me Want To Stout!'
Eileen Barbee of St. Charles, MO won $10,000 for a cupcake recipe using stout beer and Scharffen Berger chocolate. 'You Make Me Want To Stout," Barbee's entry, and the $10,000 are inducements for me to learn to bake.
For the fourth straight year, Scharffen Berger chocolate and TuttiFoodie sponsored the Chocolate Adventure Contest, awarding $20,000 to the three best original recipes incorporating Scharffen Berger chocolate in the U.S. Well, there's one more catch...
Entrees have to incorporate one or more of Scharffen Berger's "adventure" ingredients. This year for the cupcake contest, the adventure ingredients were:
• Adzuki bean
• Almond flour
• Bee pollen
• Beet (fresh)
• Coconut butter, cream or milk
• Fresh or whole dried chili pepper
• Meyer lemon
• Molasses (light, dark or blackstrap)
• Stout Beer (any variety)
• Sumatra coffee bean
• Sweetened condensed milk
One might think that the more adventure ingredients you use and blend scrumptiously, the better your chances of winning, but Barbee's You Make Me Want To Stout incorporated only one: stout beer. Specifically, she used Milk Stout ("Milk sugar in your stout is like cream in your coffee."), by the Left Hand Brewing Company in Longmont, Colorado.
Second place winner didn't do badly either; Jennifer Daskevick, a California gal, won $7,000 for her Spicy Dulce de Leche and Chocolate Cream Stout Cupcakes With Chile Ganache And Candied Serrano Chiles. That's a cupcake with a very descriptive name!
And Jennifer Burke, another Californian, took home $3,000 for her third place Beer Bellies, a cocoa - stout cupcake with frosting made of beer and malt, and topped with pretzel 'crumbles.'
Next year's Chocolate Adventure Contest will have new adventure ingredients and a new theme - probably not "cupcakes." While you are learning how to bake with Scharffen Berger chocolate, you might as well try your hand at the three top cupcake recipes of the year, linked above.
