A small but promising study was conducted by Peter J. Littrup, M.D. and his team at the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, MI, in which 13 women with breast cancer were treated with a minimally invasive technique - image guided cryotherapy, the freezing to death of tumor cells.

Researchers at NYU's Langone Medical Center used positron emission tomography (PET) with Pittsburgh Compound B (PiB), a new fluorescent dye that highlights amyloid plaques during a PET scan used to study the brains of 42 healthy persons.  Fourteen of this study's 42 volunteers had no family history of Alzheimer's disease, 14 had fathers who were diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and 14 volunteers had mothers with the disease.

TIAs aren't called mini strokes for nothing.  The most common cause of TIA is the very same as the most common cause of stroke: blood clots blocking blood flow to the brain.  The difference is that TIAs usually resolve within minutes or a few hours. Targeted Ultrasound Tested As Stroke Prevention Method

The large helmet is the ExAblate 4000, a magnetic resonance guided high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) device, by Israel's Insightec.  ExAblate 4000 has been tested successfully to isolate and destroy the smallest of tumors in the brain, without affecting the surrounding tissues or bones.  Now, researchers are looking at the technology to do the same with blood clots that can lead to stroke.
