First off, who in their right mind goes out and buys a skull. Ok, don't answer that. I don't want to know. But if you were to buy a skull, why buy an ordinary one. Why not buy one with over 8,600 diamonds encrusted in it. If you're going to do it, you may as well do it right. Right?
Lucky for those skull collectors, artist Damien Hirst created a diamond encrusted platinum cast of a human skull named "For the Love of God." If you want to buy it, it will cost $98 million (give or take a couple of dollars). I think I'll go out on a limb (without double checking) and state that this is the most expensive human skull ever.
The skull, cast from a 35-year-old 18th-century European male, is coated with 8,601 diamonds, including a large pink diamond worth more than $8 million in the center of its forehead.
In case you're curious, Hirst put back the original teeth. Although its missing one original tooth. It just goes to show you that you can't get much for $98 million anymore.
If you are interested in taking a look at the skull, "For the Love of God" is currently displayed in the White Cube gallery in East London.

This Was In Today's Newspaper! (But I didn't read the article.)
Submitted on September 1st, 2007 by Anonymous (not verified)I only scanned the article since I already knew about this skull from your article, but I think someone bought it for $100 million and the makers couldn't remember if it cost them $20 or $30 million. Nice profit, especially since it wasn't even their skull. Wonder what the deceased would think about this whole ordeal and if he really approves of his new face.
