The Story Behind The Device: Keep-Ur-Lid

Ellicott City, Maryland, 2007. Retired Aerospace Engineer David Lychenheim, who worked on the Hubble Space Telescope Program for more than 21 years, thinks he has solved one of earth’s more frustrating problems. Mr. Lychenheim, whose house rests high upon a cliff in historic Ellicott City, just outside Baltimore Maryland, possesses a particularly unique problem. It seems that Mr. Lychenheim has been plagued with a problem that many people also experience, but because he lives on a cliff, the issue became a more serious problem for him to deal with. Every Monday night the Lychenheims put out their trash for pickup, along with all the other residents in their neighborhood. The problem initially surfaced when animals rummaged through their trash or after the trash collectors finished emptying the trashcan, all their trashcan lids rolled away down their steep cliff. Big deal you might say, just find the lids and get on with your life. Well because Mr. Lychenheim lives high above the Patapasco River finding his trash can lids is no easy matter, and this happened week after frustrating week. While walking his dog throughout his neighborhood Mr. Lychenheim realized that he was not alone in having problems keeping control of his trashcan lids, in fact the problem was much wider than he originally thought. Trashcan lids could be found scattered throughout his neighborhood because of high winds, animals rummaging through the trash or trash collectors who simply wouldn’t replace the lids properly. In fact it was obvious that the trash collectors had a genuine distaste for trashcan lids because they always threw the lids far from the cans. Mr. Lychenheim realized that “runaway lids” were a problem everyone was having, not just for people living on cliffs. So the question arose why wasn’t there a way to secure the lids? After looking around it was quite obvious, trashcan manufacturers really didn’t care if you lose your lids, in fact they would benefit if you had to buy a new can. The more Mr. Lychenheim looked around the more lids he saw scattered and separated from their owners. Mr. Lychenheim’s engineering curiosity got the better of him and he began designing a prototype device to keep his lids attached to his trashcans. Over the next months Mr. Lychenheim showed his design to several of his friends and neighbors. At first they laughed at Mr. Lychenheim’s entry into the “garbage” business, but after seeing that the device actually solved the problem, their next question was how could they get one for their trashcans? So, the simple and “down to earth” resolution was solved with the birth of the Keep Ur Lib kit. The kit contains all the necessary stainless steel hardware to securely fasten your lids to the base of the garbage can (steel or plastic). Today we are announcing the new product called “ Keep Ur Lid” available via the Internet (http://www.Keep-Ur-Lid.com) for $5.95 plus S&H.
