10 Jaw-Dropping Kitchens

Want a dream kitchen?

So my last article on the Grandma's Kitchen—and the fact that a few food laden holidays are just around the corner—got me thinking, what other cool and innovative kitchens are out there? After some digging, I found the 10 kitchens that turn ordinary cooking into a heightened culinary experience. From kitchens that play music to kitchens that float, you're sure to see some cooking spaces that will wet your appetite.

10. Solaris Kitchen

Ernestomeda brings us the first kitchen on the list. Presented recently at the International Biennial Kitchen Furniture Exhibition, The Solaris Kitchen, designed by noted Italian designer Pietro Arosio, "doesn't look like any other kitchen" according to Arosio. He's probably right. The tapered modern shape is mostly made up of Corian , a sturdy plastic-like work surface. Also integrated is a small sink with spray faucet and a glass-top stove which blends in seamlessly with the surface due its lack of knobs or grills. A flat plane is the key here. Below the work surface are drawers for storage, and the whole thing is wheeled for portability. If you need a little more storage space, Ernestomeda also makes free standing closets called the M.O.D.E closet system. (Via Kitchens.it )

9. #1 Kitchen

Contrary to its name, the #1 Kitchen actually comes in at number nine on the list, and for obvious reasons. It looks like a simple wooden table; but it's actually the simplest kitchen ever made. With two burners and a sink you're only going to get away with the most basic parts of kitchen work here: cooking and cleaning. Designed by Italian designer Gianna Farina, this kitchen seems to be a lesson in modesty, but don't let the four legs fool you. The wood is either salvaged from a Hungarian castle or oak from Slovenia, and you can only get the table through Tikkapa in Milan. So there's just a wee bit o' pretension there, and, if you ask me, it could be made just as easily here in the U.S. from the tree in my backyard. (Dream kitchen via Apartment Theraphy )

8. Strato Cucine

Kitchens like this and others by (gosh another) Italian designer Marco Gorini fit nicely in the category of "modern minimalist kitchens." The Strato Cucine are commonly made of stainless steel, medium density fiberboard (MDF) or stone, but,no matter the material, Gorini makes these kitchens look like sculptures. They are, however, assuredly fully functional and quite breathtaking. The kitchen in the picture reminds me of a white washed Greek chapel. Fitting I guess, if you look at cooking as a spiritual or transcendental experience. (Dream kitchen via Loco Moco )

7. The Circular Kitchen

The Circular Kitchen, by CC Concepts LTD , is one of many solutions to the growing problem of comfortable living in small spaces. This kitchen is completely portable and comes with all the storage space of a conventional kitchen, but there are no doors to anything. Everything is accessible simply by rotating the unit. Alfred Averbeck, the designer, assures consumers that "it contains the equivalent of 12 cupboards from a conventional kitchen." The kitchen is also fully stocked with stove, sink, dishwasher and microwave. And you don't have to worry about hooking the unit up to a bunch of outlets; inside it has its own lighting, electrical sockets, electronics, water and waste disposal. When you're ready to close up shop, just rotate 180 degrees and the whole thing is contained in a nice metal case. (Dream kitchen via Neatorama and ImpactLabs )

6. The Musical Cooking Station

So, earlier I mentioned those who look at cooking as a spiritual or transcendental experience. But, for every one of those there is the person who finds cooking to be time consuming and boring. Well, thanks to designer Fei Zhu those who need a little kick in their cooking can use the Taste DJ to whip up a crème brulee while scratching out some phat beats. The counter top comes with Backward key, push buttons and knobs, by which firepower, oven, cooking mode, water and volume of the stereo are controlled. There is also an integrated multimedia computer system with touch screen panel. Forgot the next ingredient to your trifle? Go ahead and look it up on the internet right in front of you! If that's not enough the Taste DJ also has a seasoning adding system that will automatically add all the spices in just the right amount to your cooking. Simply choose the seasonings and rotate the seasoning ring and the seasonings are sprayed right into the pan. Once you start cooking on this thing you might never want to do anything else.
