It may but it will put the mailbox 10-12 foot off the roadside so they will have to work to get it. I have found that if it's not at the roadside that they move on to the next one.

That big of a need, huh?

I confess it's never really been a problem anywhere I lived, so I'll take for granted it's a problem that needs a solution. Thinking back to when I was juvenile and delinquent, vandalism wasn't my thing but defeating a challenge would be. What I'm saying is make sure it doesn't appear like you're daring people to get it. Just my initial thought.

Might this interfere (in either position) with sidewalks that are typically set 4-5 feet back from the curb? If so, it might be not only unpopular but illegal in some communities.

How much work is required? Do I have to manually shift it twice a day? Is it simple enough for my wife/child to do it? (In the rain ... with something in the other hand ...)

All that aside, I like it. Have you considered contacting construction companies to get them installed with new housing?
