Nintendo WiiAfter months and months of silence, Nintendo finally announced release dates and a price for their next generation console, the Nintendo Wii. On September 14th, Nintendo told the press that its Nintendo Wii would be launching in the United States on November 19th at a price of $249.99. The console will be sold with the five Wii Sports games on one disk, similar to what Nintendo did with Mario on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. The console will also come with one wireless Wii remote controller, and one nunchuck controller.

The Wii is aimed at the general public, and is meant to sell to the masses. Games on the system will receive a Teen or Everyone rating from the ESRB. Nintendo states that the “Wii is creating worldwide excitement with its unique control system, an inventive, first-of-its-kind controller whose position can be detected in a 3-D space.”

PLAYSTATION 3After months and months of silence, I would have thought that Nintendo would have brought a big surprise to the consumers in price tag. For the sheer lack of power in the Nintendo Wii, I feel that the $249.99 price is much too high for what you’re getting. The biggest downside to the Wii console is the 729MHz processor speed. This is a very small amount, especially compared to the 3.2 GHz processor speeds of the Playstation 3 and the XBox 360. This downside will make it much harder for developers to run large programs on the Wii, and will cause games to be downgraded to run on the console.

To me, the Wii seems like a good second console behind either the PS3 or the XBox 360. If you can only afford one, however, I would suggest getting either the PS3 or the XBox 360, since you will get more bang for your buck, even though you’re spending more overall.
