BrideIt’s that time of year again when ghosts and goblins and Flappers and Ninjas hit the streets in search of loot. Halloween is upon us, so it’s time to get those thinking caps on to help dream up the perfect costume for the loved ones in your family.
For years, I have gussied up our dogs for the holiday so they can join in on the festivities. We have a pair of pups, so we usually opt for theme costumes. We have had Hula Boy and Hula Girl. (Yes, my dog did don a coconut bra.) One year we had a pair of Firedogs. They have been bride and groom, Sonny and Cher and Batman and Superman. (They didn’t have Wonder Woman that year so the female dog just had to suck it up and pretend to be a male superhero.) I’ve rounded up some adorable costume ideas for you here to get you going on your Halloween brainstorming.
Theme Costumes
If you like the idea of theme costumes, there are plenty to choose from. There are those caped crusaders like Superman and Wonder Woman
who can fit together in the general theme of superheroes, but what about the ones that always work as a team? How about Batman
and Robin
, for instance?
Wonder Woman
Superman
Batman
Robin
Of course, it’s not only superheroes who keep crime off of our streets. There’s a new Sheriff in town and his name is Fido! He works paw in paw with his closely linked colleague, the K-9 cop. Unfortunately, try as they might, there are always those lawbreakers out there that they need to keep tabs on. So make sure you keep your eye on the Prisoner pup
!

K9 Cop
Another fun idea for your duo of dogs (or more) is a casting call from a favorite movie. My household is crawling with Star Wars fans, so we’re considering a Pincess Leia and Yoda
dog to join us in our trick-or-treating. But, depending on the temperament of your dog, you may opt for the more dangerous Darth Vader
.

Princess Leia Slave
Darth Vader
Scary Costumes
For the good part of the year, our dutiful dogs demonstrate their oh-so sweet sides, right? Perhaps Halloween is their time to take on a more menacing alter ego. Maybe for just one day a year they want to pretend to be their polar opposites: something frightful! A ghost or a skeleton
costume may be just the right ticket to scare off those bigger dogs in the neighborhood!

Character and Animal Costumes
Scooby Doo
Just like in the world of costumes for adults, there are numerous character options to choose from for your dog. In fact, your dog can even dress up as another dog! With the Skooby Doo dog costume, you can have your pet join along with your own Daphne, Fred, Shaggy and Velma for a whole family theme! Then there are other fun costumes like the Buzz Lightyear and Snow White
characters that your dog can take on for the night.

Snow White
Dressing up like another dog could be fun for your pup but what about dressing up as another animal entirely? They can put on their pig face for the night or even dress up like a stinky skunk
. (I know that by the smell of my dogs sometimes this would not be a far stretch!)

Pig
What the heck costumes!
If your dog turns his wet nose up at theme, scary and character costumes, there are few other options to consider. But, I have to warn you, the following costumes may cause some of you to proclaim, “What the heck?!” Take the pimp costume, for instance. I don’t even want to get into the logistics of a dog pimp, but you have to admit your little guy would be pretty cute in his zebra trimmed, crushed velvet glory! How about the hippie
dog costume? Only your dog will know his hippie-cause, but he’ll be making some kind of statement with his garb! Last, and maybe least (amount of fabric), there’s the Strip N' Dog
costume. Those Chipendale dancers have got nothing on your little canine Lethario with his handsome bow tie and ankle cuffs which he will, presumably, depart with as the night goes on and a few Milk Bones make it into his pocket.

Whatever costume you choose for your dog, just remember to keep him on a short leash. There are all kinds of creepy, spooky types prowling the streets on All Hallow’s Eve!

Submitted on October 16th, 2006 by Gloria CamposI was reading this while my 4 year old was looking over my shoulder and now she not only wants a pet, but she wants a pet with a costume. I guess I should have waited to read this when she wasn't around:).
