The Fastest Blu Ray Burner Ever, By Asus
Far as Blu Ray goes, there's a new kid on the block. Asus recently launched a USB 3.0 Blu Ray burner, and it's looking like this handy little device is going to crush the competition in terms of both speed, and...well, just plain looking good. Don't believe me? Have a look at what it can do.
Okay, before we go any further, I've just gotta say something. The burner- christened the BW-12D1S-U (Name's a bit of a mouthful, isn't it?) is a sexy piece of hardware. Just take a look at the picture over yonder: Three smooth, sweeping triangles arch towards the top left corner of the machine, wherein is set a glowing, blue jewel. This jewel serves as the power button, naturally- and it will probably glow.
Oh, did I mention the whole device is rather shiny, too? It's a very aesthetically pleasing gadget, even though it doesn't necessarily have to be- I mean, it's designed to be a Blu Ray writer, not an artistic centerpiece. Just the same, Asus has obviously spent a bit of time working out the visual appeal of the tech, and it shows.
It's designed to operate both horizontally and vertically, too- it comes with a dock so it can do the latter. Now, I'm not quite sure how large this lovely little contraption is going to be- Asus's website has it listed as 243 centimeters long, 163 centimeters wide and 63 centimeters tall. That's roughly seven feet by five feet by two feet. Let's assume that's a typo, since the whole device is probably going to weigh around two pounds, and I somehow doubt something that light would be bigger than a person.
So, what can this diamond-shaped beauty do? Well, there's a reason I'm calling it the fastest Blu Ray writer on the market- because it is. Take a look at what it can do (specs from Itech News Net and Engadget):
- Writes BD-R at 12x speed
- Writes BD-R DL at 8x speed
- Writes BD-RE/RE DL at 2x speed
- Writes DVD+/-R at 16x speed
- Writes DVD+RW at 8x speed
- Writes DVD-RW at 6x speed
- Writes DVD+/-R DL at 8x speed
- Writes CD-R/RW at a blazing 40x speed
- Contains 4 MB Buffer Memory
- 1080p Output
- HD support
- Realtime 2D to 3D conversion
What the speed notations all translate to, says Asus, is the ability to burn somewhere around fifty gigabytes of data in less than fifteen minutes. Um, wow. Pretty fast, isn't it? (High Def Digest) Of course, the BW-12D1S-U(They really need a catchier name) is going to ask a few things of your computer system in order to achieve this. To use Asus's new Blu Ray Burner, you'll need the following minimum specs on your rig (Source: Asus):
- 3.4 GHz of Processing Power or More
- 1 GB or more of RAM
- Nvidia Gefore 7600/Radeon ATI X1600 Series or Above
So...not terribly demanding, but you aren't going to be able to use this burner with older tech.
So, when does the BW-12D1S-U release? Unfortunately, there's not really been an absolute word on that quite yet- I'll wager it's probably going to be heading to the market sometime during the upcoming summer months. As for the price...well, I've not actually heard anything about that, either. If I had to guess, it'll probably be somewhere in the avenue of 6-800 dollars. Beyond that, all I can say is that it probably isn't going to be cheap.
I'll see what I can do to keep you folks posted.
