Size Matters...10 Gigantic Ads that Grab Attention

Sometimes it does take a really big ad to make a really big presence and a really big message. Here are my picks for some of the best in oversized advertising:

1. Ass Kisser

This giant ad was placed in Germany by a company who helps find quality jobs. This ad humorously shows folks that there are easier ways to get good jobs then sucking up to your boss and being a brown-noser.

2. Fed Ex Kinkos

This giant highlighter was used to "highlight" the fact that Fed Ex Kinkos now sells office supplies. What a great way to "highlight" this by using the already painted curb.

3. Fed Ex Kinkos

SImilarly, to point out the new office supply line, Fed Ex Kinkos trategically used and oversized bottle of white out in another already painted area, the cross walk.

4. London Ink - Tattoo Show

This giant sculpture of a person was used to display a tattoo and promote the new show. Making people look at a huge body forces them to pat attention to the huge tattoo signs on their bodies.

5. Toys R Us

This ad for an inflatable globe as part of the inflatable beach toy collection, the regular ad space of an advertising column was extended to the whole planet.

6. One Big Paint Job

This ad for an insurance company reads: Life Comes At You Fast. That fact is perfectly demonstrated by a huge can of paint and a huge paint spill. Notice the eye-catching element of the paint looking like it actually spilled over a series of parked cars.

7. Rodenstock Eyewear

A sculpture made by the Berlin artist Stefan von Essen which looks like a giant banana peel, was set in various shopping malls. Wearing bifocal glasses by Rodenstock you can’t overlook a slippery banana peel on the street.

8. Paper Bag

This one big paper bag was placed over ads in shopping malls in New Zealand to promote the new season of Ugly Betty.

9. Penline Tape

What a billboard...this huge roll of tape is actually holding up the billboard.

9. Cuttin' Up

The pick in the tree reads, "Cuttin' Up. A play about barber shops. alliancetheatre.org."

To promote the Alliance Theatre's production of Cuttin' Up, a play about the culture of the African-American barber shop, the advertiser created a guerilla campaign based on a classic icon that figures prominently in the play - the afro pick. They produced a series of five-foot-tall afro picks and then set them in large shrubs and bushes around the city.

The goal was to generate buzz and ticket sales, and they got both – five stories on the local news, and a 60% increase in ticket sales.

Which of these do you think works the best? What do you think of the idea of using really big oversized ads? Do you think they are more effective at grabbing your attention? What type of product is a natural for oversized advertising? Do you like the ones I picked or do you know of any that are better?

Double take

Fed Ex Kinkos wins it for me - if I saw one of these outsize products I'd know it was not real but it would still intrigue me - as seems to have happened with the passers-by in the photos - makes the product memorable and the name of the manufacturer sticks - unlike in the others that are 'stunts' - fine but they don't make you remember what the name was or what the purpose of it was.

Fed Ex for sure

I think it's a perfect idea to use oversized ads. Fed Ex are a perfect example of how this kind of advertivising can grab people's attention, and have them actualy stop, discover that the buzz is all about and even take pictures of the huge items. THAT is an effective strategy.
