Can bikers help solve our energy problems? They are being challenged to do so by the Innovate Or Die invention contest, sponsored by Specialized Bicycles and Google Inc . Innovate or Die is the first invention contest for the best machine that runs on human pedal power.

One to five inventors can participate in an invention entry, so you can put your heads together with your favorite biking friends for this project. You wil need to build your prototype and capture it in operation on video. Submissions to the Innovate or Die contest must be made via You Tube, so if you are not registered with You Tube, do it! It's free.

As an example of a pedal powered invention, Specialized offers this short video of a bicycle powering a computer, invented by Specialized's creative director.

The invention contest is open to residents of several countries, including the U.S., Great Britain, Japan, and more. Video submissions of your invention in operation must be no longer than 2 minutes, no larger than 100 megabytes. Deadline for submission is December 15, 2007. Winners will be notified by email or phone on January 15, 2008.

The winner of the Innovate or Die contest will receive $5000 and a 2008 model Specialized Globe bike; runners-up will receive the Globe bikes, but not the cash.
