Many of my more critical readers accused my article earlier this year on used condom hair bands of being false rumors. Now that the story on the Chinese making hair bands out of used condoms has been proven true by various sources, get ready for the next gross-out item in the news: India is selling doors and window planks made out of human feces.

Sound ridiculous? That Is what I thought until I heard about India’s sanitation specialist (what a job!), Bindeshwar Pathak, talk excitedly about his Poop Depot, the future home improvement store for overseas fecal consumers.

Having developed a durable raw material out of human waste, a collaboration of some Mexican designers birthed the first few door designs, and the result was apparently so impressive, they are now on display at the Lisson Art Gallery of London. The British relationship with India is obviously long-standing, but this celebration of art out of a toilet is a little too much for many media reps to handle.

The gallery features 22 sculptures resembling doors and window panes, and all of the um, materials, for the construction of the exhibit were taken from India’s Sulabh lavatories. Now, Sulabh, with Pathak heading up the team, is researching and brainstorming what over innovative creations they can make out of fecal matter.
Dreaming of Toilet Innovation
Surprised? India’s not. They are already home to Sulabh Museum of Toilets in Delhi. So catch up world! The future of architecture is found in an Asian toilet! Questioning its validity? Just ask the United Nations, who recently recognized Sulabh for its positive contributions to sanitation and society in India. Oh crap…
