[adsense:300x250:1:1]Description:
An electric scooter was modified to support solar panels for charging the on board batteries. Scooter has been driven for 1,100 miles without plugging into any other source. The panels fold out for charging while parked at work, and fold back in while riding on the road. Little change in road handling from original model.
Bike is licensed and insured in Michigan so the government and insurance industry has accepted my model as viable transportation.
The goal for this invention is to change a daily expense into a no cost to operate vehicle (or as little as possible) and remove dependance on oil. In a southern climate range should be nearly double of Michigan, where scooter rode 1.100 miles without any charging other than the on board panels. This was 104 days commuting to work, some 5 miles away. Information of this invention is widely available on the web so anyone wishing to do the same, can.
My only goal is to share with anyone wishing to do the same, or similar projects. No wish to gain financially. There is no honor in greed.

negitive energy
Does the aerodynamic resistance negate the benefit of solar panels?

negative energy
There is no negative energy with the panels. While riding, they are folded up against the side of the bike. The rider is in the air path, shielding the panels. Speed is slow, moped class, so no real wind resistance anyway. The panels fold out while parked, charging the batteries. This charge is used to propel the bike while traveling so no gas is ever used by this machine. Other than 15 dollars for three years of registration and 75 dollars a year for insurance, there is no cost to operate. Last year was 1,100 gas free miles in 104 trips to work.

Why are you guys so harsh on
Why are you guys so harsh on this? (When I came in it was 1 star rating on 6 votes).
Anything that uses solar is a step in the right direction. I guess nobody else (besides Don himself) cares about the environment or our dependance on foreign oil. They just all drive their SUV's around, oblivious, and without a care.
5 stars Don, plus a huge pat on the back for making plans freely available and not focusing on personal monetary gain. It's a great little scooter.
