It looks like Hammacher’s $800 off-road moto-board has some competition. You now have at least two motorized, off-road skateboards for your Xmas [Death]wish list.
I suppose the combination of motocross and skateboarding was inevitable. After all, they’re pretty much the same thing on different vehicles. They’re both all about jumps and tricks. They’re both in competitions like the X-Games. You have to have a screw a little loose to excel at either. They were meant to be together.
And the MXB Shocker does just that. The unfortunately-named contraption has a 1,500-watt electric motor and two big wheels, rather than a four-wheeled, skateboard-style set-up. While that would strike me as a little unstable, the thing’s actually got a boot and binding system similar to a snowboard. So you get more feel and more control. Unfortunately you also get more pain should you fall.
The MXB Shocker is capable of speeds up to 30 mph and it weighs about 70 lbs. Price? $2,999. Ouch, that makes Hammacher’s board look kind of cheap. Not sure how much a full-fledged dirt bike costs, but it seems like you’d be better off with that. If you want it though, they’re advertising Christmas delivery.
I’m not usually a fan of things like this, but from the video I saw of it, it actually looks like a lot of fun. What I don’t understand is the electric motor. It’s not like you’re going to be playing green crusader while you’re tearing dirt at the local BMX track; you may as well get the added power of a full-blown gas engine. And this way, you can just bring a can of gas to the track and not have to worry about running out of juice.
Rest assured, MXB has that option coming too. The 2012 Motorcrossboard gets a10-hp 50cc gas engine that delivers up to 50 mph. That’s more like it.
