On October 12th, with just a few hours of tweeting under the new Twilight Twitter account’s belt, it had already tallied 22,000 followers. Three days later and as of the time of this posting, it has more than tripled its fan base to reach 78,000. Can it reach a million and will it shift the age demographic on Twitter? If the number of Twilight followers continues to triple every 3 days, it could potentially reach 1,000,000 followers in one week’s time.
According to a Mashable report, "based on previous trending topics and heavily retweeted Twilight news, we don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to anticipate that the Twilight Twitter account will hit a million followers, or break the top 10, in record speed."
With a scheduled release date of November 20, 2009 for New Moon (the third movie in the Twilight movie franchise series), and the newly released preview updates, this movie’s appeal will not only build exponentially in time, it could very well shift the Twitter’s age demographic from the 35-49 to 18-24. This would be a significant shift since this past February, Nielsen’s stats indicated that the demographic for 18-24 year-olds was so negligible, they couldn’t even put a number to it.
