Uber announced a $300 million partnership with electric vehicle maker Lucid on Thursday to deploy over 20,000 robotaxis in the next six years. The ride-hailing company will invest $300 million in Lucid as part of the deal. Autonomous vehicle startup Nuro will develop the self-driving technology for Lucid to supply Uber with the robotaxis.
The companies plan to launch the service in a major U.S. city next year.

Nuro, which has backing from Google and the SoftBank Vision Fund, will provide “level 4 self-driving system” software for the cars. This technology can drive passengers in normal traffic and weather without a human driver.
robotaxi program investment details
The first prototype vehicle is being tested at Nuro’s proving grounds in Las Vegas. Nuro raised $106 million earlier this year from investors like T. Rowe Price, Fidelity, Tiger Global, and Greylock.
The deal with Lucid and Nuro comes after Uber’s existing partnership with Waymo. Waymo expanded its service to Texas this year using Level 4 autonomous vehicles. Lucid said their 450-mile range Gravity vehicles will help lower costs, reduce charge times, and improve access.
Winterhoff said future Lucid vehicles in development could also join the program. Nuro sees the deal as a “blueprint for a robotaxi program that’s both commercially viable and globally scalable.”
