Modern air conditioning was designed in July 1902 by Willis Haviland Carrier, a 25-year-old engineer at the Buffalo Forge Company, to solve a printing problem. Humidity at the Sackett & Wilhelms plant in Brooklyn was making paper swell and shrink between passes, throwing multicolour ink out of register. Human comfort was not the goal, and it would be two decades before it became the point.
The problem was paper, not heat
Colour lithography in 1902 meant running a sheet through the press once per colour, and each pass had to land precisely on the last. Paper is hygroscopic. It takes on moisture from the air and expands, then gives it up and contracts. A Brooklyn summer moved those dimensions enough that the second colour missed the first.
The result was scrap, lost production days, and at-risk clients. Judge magazine, one of the plant’s significant accounts, was on a schedule that the misregistration threatened.
The complaint reached Buffalo Forge through a consulting engineer named Walter Timmis, who brought it to J. Irvine Lyle, head of the company’s New York sales operation. Lyle took the job. It landed on Carrier, who had graduated from Cornell the previous year.
The first attempt failed
Timmis suggested running the air over a burlap roller towel soaked in calcium chloride brine. The brine did pull moisture out of the air. It also added heat, salt, and odour, all three unacceptable in a room full of paper and ink.
Carrier’s reframing was the actual invention. Rather than absorbing moisture chemically, he worked on dew point: chill air below the temperature at which it can hold its moisture, let the water condense out, and humidity comes under direct control. Cooling was the mechanism, not the objective.
The standard telling has the idea arriving while he stood on a foggy railway platform in Pittsburgh, reasoning that he needed to manufacture fog on purpose. That anecdote comes down to us largely through Carrier’s own company and should be read as the company tells it.
The working design pushed air across pipes carrying cold well water. The drawings are dated 17 July 1902.
What the patent actually says
Carrier filed on 16 September 1904, serial number 224,758. US Patent 808,897, “Apparatus for Treating Air,” was granted on 2 January 1906.
Read the claims and you find something unexpected. The patent is written around an air-purifying apparatus: an air conduit containing a separator built from spaced upright plates with continuous zigzag surfaces, angled so that projections form gutters and strip entrained liquid out of the moving air. It is a device for washing air and then getting the water back out of it.
Cooling appears once in the entire indexed vocabulary of the document. The words that recur are liquid, particle, impurity, separator, spray. The patent that founded the air conditioning industry is, on its own terms, a machine for separating water from air, and everything the phrase means to a homeowner today is downstream of a claim about plate geometry in a duct.
Carrier’s second major filing is equally revealing. US Patent 1,085,971, “Method of humidifying air and controlling the humidity and temperature thereof,” granted 3 February 1914, opens by framing the invention as relating “more particularly” to textile mills. Not homes, and not offices.

Carrier did not coin the term, and did not own the patent
Two things nearly every article gets wrong.
“Air conditioning” is not Carrier’s phrase. Stuart H. Cramer, a textile engineer, used it in a 1906 patent claim for a device that added water vapour to the air in textile plants, conditioning the yarn rather than the room. The word was doing industrial-process work. The name we now use for the machine that cools houses was originally about making thread easier to spin.
Carrier also did not own US 808,897. The patent names him as inventor and reads “assignor to Buffalo Forge Company.” He was a salaried employee and the invention belonged to his employer. Thirteen years passed after the Brooklyn installation before Carrier, Lyle, E. T. Murphy, L. L. Lewis and others left to found the Carrier Engineering Corporation in 1915.
Comfort came last
Follow the installations and the priority is obvious. The first international sale, in 1907, went to the Fuji Silk Spinning Company in Yokohama. The first centrifugal chiller, in 1923, went to the Stephen F. Whitman & Son candy plant in Philadelphia. Every early customer was a material that misbehaved in humidity.
In 1911 Carrier presented his “Rational Psychrometric Formulae” to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, giving the field a shared basis for calculating how air, moisture and temperature interact. That paper did more to create the industry than any single machine, and it too was aimed at engineers running processes.
Carrier filed more than eighty patents over his career. A machine designed for lithographic registration ended up in your bedroom because once a room can be held at a chosen humidity and temperature, it stops mattering whether the thing being protected is a sheet of paper or a person.
